Ask any runner who is training for a race – regardless of whether they are logging in long slow runs on the weekend to build their endurance or hammering through interval workouts to build in speed – and I believe they’ll agree with this statement, “Anyone can do the last mile…it’s doing all of the others before that matter.”
It’s getting through the hard stuff that sets the foundation for achieving your goal and separates you from your competitors.
The next time you are hammering away at making passive candidate cold calls or meeting repeatedly with hiring stakeholders to develop an agreed upon job profile – remind yourself that it’s these hard efforts that will set the stage for a great hire.
(Of course, having a huge post-race or post-project reward to look forward to doesn’t hurt.)
What is your secret for getting yourself through a challenging effort at work?
